including:  political concepts from the times of the Greeks through  the Enlightenment and founding of the
United States of America; creation of the US Constitution; nature of the three branches of the US Federal

Six Traits Writing (AIMS Prep) EN1001 0.5 An intensive course that focuses on practicing and applying the six traits of writing:  organization,
sentence structure, word choice, ideas, voice, and conventions.  In addition to extensive practice
working on these traits, evaluation of web-based writing samples assists students in mastering their
understanding and application of the six traits.
 
Journalism ENJOUR 0.5 The focus in this course is elementary news gathering an understanding local political structures,
news and feature writing, interviewing skills, media law, ethics, and cultural sensitivity.  Practice in
various news writing forms and emphasizes critical reading of news, entertainment, and advertising
content.  Use of interactive computer networks , databases, and other electronic resources.
 
7th Grade Elements of Language Arts Semester 1 EN1007S1 0.5 This course focuses on the fundamentals of literary elements using a wide variety of genres.  Writing
7th Grade Elements of Language Arts Semester 2 EN1007S2 0.5 assignments will include the following types of writing:  eyewitness account, instructions writing,
advantages/disadvantages, novel jacket, informational report, persuasive essay, print advertisement.
Core academic English course.  Course work will help students develop skills and demonstrate
proficiency in the Arizona State Standards for reading and writing.  Writing instruction and practice
covers grammar, usage, mechanics, spelling, and vocabulary.  Reading focuses on interpretive skills by
reading and completing assignments based on novels, short stories, drama, non-fiction, poetry, and
functional print.  Students will apply the writing process and the six traits of writing in a variety of
writing assignments.
 
8th Grade Elements of Language Arts Semester 1 EN1007 or EN1008S1 0.5 This course expands on the 7th grade foundation and forms a transition into the high school English
8th Grade Elements of Language Arts Semester 2 equivalent EN1008S2 0.5 Courses.  Writing assignments will include the following types of writing:  personal narrative, complex
process description, cause and effect essay, book review, research report, persuasive essay, brochure.
Core academic English course.  Course work will help students develop skills and demonstrate
proficiency in the Arizona State Standards for reading and writing.  Writing instruction and practice
covers grammar, usage, mechanics, spelling, and vocabulary.  Reading focuses on interpretive skills
by reading and completing assignments based on novels, short stories, drama, non-fiction, poetry, and
functional print.  Students will apply the writing process and the six traits of writing in a variety of
writing assignments.
 
9th Grade Elements of Language Arts Semester 1 EN1008 or EN1009S1 0.5 The literary focus for 9th grade is a variety of literature from multiple cultures and genres.
9th Grade Elements of Language Arts Semester 2 equivalent EN1009S2 0.5 Writing assignments will include the following types of writing:  place description, personal narrative,
compare/contrast essay, cause and effect essay, poem analysis, research paper, persuasive essay,
review of a sitcom.  Core academic English course.  Course work will help student develop skills and
demonstrate proficiency in the Arizona State Standards for reading and writing.  Writing instruction and
practice covers grammar, usage, mechanics, spelling, and vocabulary.  Reading focuses on interpretive
skills by reading and completing assignments based on novels, short stories, drama, non-fiction, poetry
and functional print.  Students will apply the writing process and the six traits of writing in a variety of
writing assignments.
