Student Code Of Conduct
To maintain a safe and positive learning environment, Sequoia Choice Distance Learning (Choice) requires that student conduct meet the five expectations listed below.  Students should read this information carefully because Choice will hold them accountable for the standards outlined.

Expectation #1:  Students will respect and obey the law.

Any illegal activity occurring while participating in a school activity, when with other Choice students, or involving school property will be met with zero tolerance and may result in police involvement and immediate suspension or expulsion.  These activities include but are not limited to: possession or use of tobacco or alcohol; activities related in any way to the purchase, use, or possession of drugs; gang-related activities; possession of weapons; or abuse.  Theft, vandalism, or other mistreatments of property belonging to others (including the school) will result in consequences ranging from an informal conference to mandatory withdrawal, and may include restitution of stolen or damaged items or police involvement.

Expectation #2:  Students will respect the ideas, beliefs, cultures, and individual differences of others.

Students engaging in verbal or written abuse, intimidation, harassment, discrimination, disrespect of authority, fighting, profanity, obscene behavior, extortion, gang-related activities, or other such behaviors will receive consequences ranging from an informal conference to mandatory withdrawal based on student attitude, severity, and prior history.

Expectation #3: Students will respect the privilege of education and behave with academic integrity.

Plagiarism, dishonesty, cheating, open disrespect of school staff, insubordination, public displays of affection (when on campus and/or participating with others in school activities), or any form of academic misconduct will result in consequences ranging from an informal conference to mandatory withdrawal based on student attitude, severity, and prior history.

Expectation #4:  Students and Cyberbullying

Any instances of written abuse, threats, intimidation, offensive language, profanity, sexually explicit and or derogatory language in any electronic, written or spoken language is not permitted within the Sequoia Choice Distance Learning environment or its labs. Any such language may be considered, “cyberbullying”.

Each Lab will address offenses that involve cyberbullying using the discipline policies of the site. Consequences for offenses that involve cyberbullying may range from a simple reprimand to suspension and or expulsion based on the severity and nature of the offense.

Some Guidelines:
  • Refrain from offensive language. If there's even a remote chance the language might be offensive to someone, rephrase the statement.
  • No flaming. Flaming includes but is not limited to hateful, hurtful, spiteful, vengeful, and derogatory language.
  • Be respectful and courteous. Write all entries as though the person you are addressing is there in person; if you wouldn't say it in person, don't write it.

Expectation #5:  Students will actively participate in their education and work to achieve their own success.

  • Attendance:  Students must devote the appropriate number of hours per week to their schoolwork (see our Attendance Policy).  Students must keep an accurate record of those hours and submit their attendance hours to the school at least once a week.
  • Communication:  Students must communicate with their teachers or their lab advisors weekly and actively seek help when needed.  They must use their Choice email accounts for all school email, check these accounts at least once a day, and respond to all staff emails within 48 hours.  In the event of computer or technical problems, students should inform the school within 24 hours.
  • Academic Progress:  Students must demonstrate academic progress and pace themselves to complete their assignments on time.  Junior high and high school students should also complete their courses on time and make good progress toward graduation.  All students must participate in Choice standardized testing including, but not limited to, AIMS.

Students who do not record sufficient attendance hours, communicate consistently and responsibly with Choice staff, and/or demonstrate appropriate academic progress will receive consequences ranging from an informal conference/letter of warning to mandatory withdrawal based on student attitude, severity, and prior history.
