Sequoia Choice Distance Learning provides educational services within a distance learning "classroom," which consists of offices, various locations around the state, and the student's home. Location of specific services is based on student need and determined at the school's discretion.
In Sequoia Choice Distance Learning, parents/guardians become active participants in their child(ren)'s education and work closely with the school. Upon enrollment, parents/guardians assume these responsibilities:
- Parents/Guardians will ensure that students have daily access to a telephone and a working, adequately equipped computer with a stable Internet connection.
Students are required to have access to the Internet every day. Families encountering computer difficulties must report them to the school within 24 hours and resolve them as soon as possible. Parents need to take whatever steps necessary to ensure that technical problems do not interrupt student learning or affect academic progress. In general, adjustments to school and course deadlines will not be made because of technical difficulties. Repeated computer problems that curtail student communication or impede academic progress can result in mandatory student withdrawal.
- Parents/Guardians will monitor student attendance and submit attendance hours to Sequoia Choice Distance Learning at least once weekly.
In distance learning, attendance hours are extremely important because they represent total educational time spent. Non-attendance has a profound impact on a child's learning and, therefore, results in serious academic consequences.
- Parents/Guardians realize that upon enrolling their child(ren), they along with their student(s) become active participants in Sequoia Choice Distance Learning.
This involvement means:
- Parents/Guardians will work closely with teachers to develop an individual instruction plan for their child(ren), which includes a variety of educational opportunities assisted by technology.
- Parents/Guardians will communicate regularly and work responsibly with the staff. Parents should check their school email accounts daily and respond to all staff messages within 48 hours. Parents are expected to interact with teachers, advisors, and staff with decency, cooperation, and respect. Students whose parents/guardians fail to communicate or responsibly work with teachers, advisors, and staff may be mandatorily withdrawn.
- Upon withdrawing from Sequoia Choice Distance Learning, parents/guardians will return all school materials within two weeks. Grades will be awarded and transcripts issued after course materials are returned and attendance records are current within the enrollment period.
- Parents/Guardians will provide student transportation.
Parents must provide transportation for their student(s) to complete tests and/or other requirements. These requirements may include AIMS testing, Terra Nova testing, hearing screenings, exams, placement tests, special education services and assessments, etc. Parents also need to transport their student(s) to field trips and other extracurricular activities.
